Draft Accreditation Proposal

NASCSP and the Community Action Partnership (CAP), together with the committee chairs from the CSBG Working Group developed an Accreditation Proposal for CSBG. The draft proposal was sent to the Administration for Children and Families on December 23, 2011.

Jeannie Chaffin Appointed Director of the Office of Community Services (OCS), Administration for Children and Families (ACF), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

George Sheldon, Assistant Secretary, ACF DHHS, announced at the 2011 NASCSP Annual Conference in Seattle, WA that Jeannie Chaffin, CSBG Senior Program and Policy Specialist, has been appointed the new Director of OCS. Her new position is effective October 11, 2011.

Poverty Rate Increases: NASCSP Calls for Bold Action to End Poverty

On September 13, 2011, the Census Bureau released its annual Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage report, confirming a continued poverty rate increase over the majority of the last decade. In 2010, the poverty rate increased to 15.1 percent from 14.3 percent in 2009. “The poverty report is a wake-up call for urgent investments in proven economic and energy initiatives like CSBG and WAP so that people can get back to work and America can fulfill its promise of prosperity for all,” said Steve Payne, Managing Director, Housing Improvements and Preservation within the State of Washington’s Department of Commerce and the President of the National Association for State Community Services Programs (NASCSP).

Gracey Ibarra, a Community Action and Workforce Investment Act (WIA) participant from Inter-County Community Council in Oklee, Minnesota, has been invited to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama during the President’s speech on creating jobs and growing the economy this evening. Betty Halvorson, Inter-County’s Employment and Training Director, will travel with Ibarra and attend the speech.

CSBG's Natalya Lozovaya Appears in AACAAA Newsletter

Our very own, Natalya Lozovaya, research analyst at NASCSP, appeared in the August issue of The Action, newsletter of the Arkansas Community Action Agencies Association (ACAAA). Natalya attended the annual ACAAA Conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas on May 11-13, 2011. At the closing general session, Lozovaya said that more than 1,000 CSBG-funded organizations had generated $14 billion to help more than 20 million people and added, “we must fight to stay alive” to be able to help the growing millions of Americans in need.

This will be a week-long social media event celebrating the 47th anniversary of the signing of the Economic Opportunity Act (EOA) and Community Action. NASCSP asks the entire Community Action Network to go online to Twitter and Facebook, and use the hashtag #EconomicOpportunity to honor the commitment President Lyndon B. Johnson made to fighting poverty in America and renew our national focus on #EconomicOpportunity for all.
